Attention Orange Belts
As an orange belt, please be aware that one of the requirements to be able to test for your blue belt is that you have to be sparring in class. Thus, you need safety gear. Minimum sparring equipment consists of head, hand and foot gear along with a mouthpiece. Shin guards are also highly recommended. One of the benefits of joining the Black Belt Club is that you receive all of this safety equipment along with much, much more in your Black Belt Club package. If you have received an invitation to join the Black Belt Club, but you have not made an appointment to discuss joining with Mr. Taylor yet, please simply contact the school office. It is at least worth talking about. We look forward to hearing from you.
Support Your Fellow Students and Parents
If you are a parent or adult student of the Bushido School of Karate, and own your own business, we would like to help you reach more potential clients! We would like to start listing contact information for the owners of businesses affiliated with BSK. In this manner, students and parents would be able to find a business owner they have at least one thing in common with, our school! If you would like to have your business listed in our newsletter, please email your name, the name of your business and all pertinant contact information to bushido96@aol.com. We will list these businesses in our monthly newsletter starting asap, if there is sufficient interest. This system would allow your business to contact over 400 families each month. We may also hi-light one of these businesses each month is there is sufficient interest.

Beat the Heat - Wear Your BSK T-Shirt to Class!!

Students may wear a Bushido School of Karate T-Shirt to class instead of their uniform top from June 1st until August 31st. It must be a Bushido School of Karate T-Shirt. T-Shirts need to be worn tucked in to the uniform pants, and of course, wear your belt. Students don’t have to wear a T-Shirt, you can still wear your complete uniform, if you want. Anyone needing to purchase a T-shirt can simply stop by the office to see what is available.

Three Ways to Ensure Martial Arts Success!

  1. Keep showing up! (especially when you don’t want to)
  2. Give your best effort! (even when it’s hard)
  3. Embrace and enjoy the journey!

Three Ways to Ensure Martial Arts Failure

  1. Card Cramming – Coming to class to get lots of hours on your card.
  2. Worrying about when other students are testing.
  3. NEVER practice at home.

Confusion about Tips and Belt Testing

Lately, there seems to have been a lot of confusion about earning tips and how that effects testing.  The below information is from our red Student Guide, pages 24 and 25 (not kinder karate guide).  If you have any questions concerning this, please see Mr. Taylor, Mr. Holt or Mr. Oceguera.

Student Guide Page 25:
“Tips or stripes are awarded as progress checks between belts.  Our school uses a 5 tip system.  Tips are NOT awarded because of accumulated hours alone, but more importantly, based on performance.  Parents, PLEASE do not mislead children by telling them to expect a tip on any given day.  There are probably many skills being looked for you are not aware of.  Tip one is awarded mainly for good attendance and attitude.  The second tip means the student is starting to have a good understanding of the material.  The third tip is an indicator that the student can complete most of the material on his own, without help or guidance.  The fourth tip means the student has completed all of the material for the next belt, but still may need to polish up certain areas.  The fifth tip, usually of a different color, is awarded when someone from our exam committee, has looked at the student and approved them for the next exam.  Please remember, in order to earn your 4th and 5th tip, you also need to be able to perform all of the material from all previous exams, as well as the new material.”

Student Guide Page 24:
“Having the minimum number of hours on the student card is by NO MEANS a guarantee that a student will be put up for an exam.  More important than the number of hours on the card is knowing the material and being able to perform it correctly.  The minimum number of hours is used merely as a guide.  Actually, after a student attains the minimum number of hours, he will probably go over the minimum by a number of hours before the next testing cycle.

If you feel you are due a tip and have not received it, the correct procedure is to ask the instructor you work with most frequently, ‘What do I need to improve in order to earn my next tip?’”

Summer Pizza Ticket Party Dates

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who supported our June 24th , Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson seminar!! What a humble, shining example of what good martial arts training can do for a person! Both Stephen, and his father Ray, were a pleasure to have at our school for the weekend. Bringing in former, or retired fighters can be challenging. Bringing in a currently active #1 World Contender, who has speaking and endorsement responsibilities all over the world, can be beyond challenging. The support shown by our attendees made this event worth all the work. Wonderboy and his dad, did mention, more than once, that they’d love to come back. We will see if we can work that out.
Wonderboy agreed to hold an autograph session between seminars in order to help raise money for the Heaven Sent Adoption Agency Angel Fund. $200 was raised in a little less than 30 minutes! Thank you Stephen for your time, and thank you to everyone who donated to this worthy organization.

Sensei Bill Taylor

Special Kids Camp Ability July 21st

Mr. Taylor will be working with a very special group of children and young adults at Camp Ability, a special needs summer program sponsored by Special Kids. These short, fun classes will be taught Fri. July 21st at 9am and 9:45am. If you would like to help with these classes, please contact Mr. Taylor at bushido96@aol.com. You could help demonstrate some moves, hold pads, encourage the students and be there for support. Any student, adult or junior is welcome to help. You can help with one or both classes. Ik-kyus who are scheduled for Black Belt testing Fall of 2017 are welcome to use these hours as part of your community service requirement. Please contact Mr. Taylor if you are interested, or have questions. These classes will be held at the Northfield Blvd. Church of Christ.

Summer Pizza Tickets

Starting June 1st, every time a Junior or Kinder Karate student attends class they will receive a ticket. This will go on until the end of July. You will need to save your tickets. Lost tickets will not be replaced. If you attend class an average of twice per week, then by the end of July you should have 16 or more tickets. Once you have at least 16 tickets, you may come sign up for a pizza party, which will be held in the Fall. This party is free and is intended to be a fun reward for keeping up your attendance during the Summer months. Again, lost tickets will not be replaced, it is your responsibility to keep track of them. It is also not fair to others for anyone to give tickets to another student, or to use tickets from a previous year.
*You must be an enrolled student in order to attend the pizza party in the Fall. This means if you are a Summer Program Student, and you do not continue with the program at the end of July, you will not be able to attend this party.
